How and Why I use Twitter.
I’ve been on Twitter since January of 2008. I think that’s pretty much around the time Twitter hit the web (just guessing) and I have to say when I started my account I didn’t even know what the point of the free service was so I kept quite quiet on it for some time before I started really hitting the updates.
But I really do love Twitter, enough to manage more then one account. I have a professional account and then I have an account that is more of that “toilet bowl humor” style account. (but that account wont be talked about in this post though.)
There are 4 types of people I primarily follow and why:
1. Photographers - I love to learn about photography being a photographer and there are many accounts that show case great how-to’s and I benefit from learning from what they share.
2. Motocross / Moto Industry - One of the main things I shoot is professional motocross and I want to keep up to date from riders and moto publications. This also allows me to keep in contact with them with out having to send out text messages or emails.
3. Friends - I love keeping in touch with friends and most my friends are either photographers or in in the moto industry, and hell some of them are both those.
4. You engage in conversation (with me duh!) - What’s the point of posting on Twitter if you don’t want to converse with people about it. It’s why I engage with everyone that takes time to mention me. Plus I’ve gained great friends this way which moves you right up to #3 on this list.
I take time to put every single person I follow into one of my 22 Twitter list. Making it easy for someone to see where these people fit in my lifestyle.
I do sometimes tweet the same tweet more then once over a time period, this is because just because I tweet something once doesn’t mean a majority of my followers have had a chance to engage with it. I read once that a study was done that 80% of tweets go unread…..(i apologize for not having a link to that study.) But that piece of info is stuck to memory.
I think twitter should be “an equal opportunity builder” I will RT good info I feel my followers will or would like to read….You should take that in consideration when you see something of mine you like and feel mutual about.
I want to build relationships through Twitter with people and companies that I couldn’t easily be in touch with otherwise.
I appropriate being included in folks Follow Friday (#FF) but find that my Fridays are usually very busy and I don’t get a chance to give my Friday shout outs. Then I feel bad. One thing I’m going to start applying to my #FF is why someone should follow these people. I would like it if people would do that for me. It’s all part of using twitter professionally and reaching out to network.
My main reason for using twitter in a professional manor is just like any other photographers….to share what is happening with my photography. Now don’t think that it’s just all shameless self-promotion cause I’ll be the first to say
I’m no one to follow for up-to-date photo trends and top-secret race scoop because there are so many other accounts out there delivering that scoop, that hearing it from me would just be an echo. I tweet to the beat of my own drum.
You follow me because you enjoy my photography which I post about mainly or mobile photos from the races. I carry my account out professionally cause I use my Twitter to network with clients and friends yet I am a normal human that has hobbies aside from my work life of being a photographer and I don’t just want to bore people with shameless self-promotion of what I do.
- But now to tell you why I may not follow you and I don’t want you to take it personal.
- I try to read every tweet that follows across my stream and keeping up on that is a full time job, so I don’t like to clutter my stream with hundreds of your tweet that are just a RT from some quotable account, or how you have terrible luck in relationships, and how boys or girls are no good lying cheats.
- Also if you never tweet, I’m better off not following you if you never tweet cause that one rare occasion when you do finally tweet, I’ll probably miss it due to that study where 80% of tweets go unseen.
- Your tweets are completely about something I have no interest with. For example: I like to golf (once a year tops) but I don’t love golf. So with your every tweet being about golf it doesn’t entice me to follow.
I’d let you know in my tweets once that I went cycling cause the day was nice, but I’d let you know 3 or 4 times that I posted new photos.
I wont fluid you with pointless tweets other then my photography, but you wont mind that’s why you follow me right…..?
Follow me @newendpro and if you’re interested in my personal fun loving attempt at humor account drop me a line at @newendpro and I’ll guide you in the right direction of that. But I’ll warn you…”Judge the tweet, not the twitter(er).”
HEY RT THIS haha jk you don’t have to, but it couldn’t hurt.
Thanks for reading folks.
